Grand Opening – Friday, September 13th 6pm-9pm
We are excited to announce our first exhibition “Bending Me Powerless” by artist Robert O’Connor. Robert will be showing new paintings and prints. He says of the exhibition: ” this new body of work originated in the surreal blackout after Hurricane Sandy – like so many of us, I felt disoriented and isolated. It was those emotions, mixed with the storm altered landscape of Atlantic Highlands, that led to this work. The title “Bending Me Powerless” is taken from a line in Walt Whitman’s poem “Proud Music of the Storm” and reflects the thoughts of mortality and feelings of fragility that directed this work. I’m excited to open Second Story Art Gallery with these pictures – they belong to this place and time and also speak to my deep love of Atlantic Highlands.”
Located above The Painted Frame, Second Story Art Gallery is the culmination of owner and artist Robert O’Connor’s project to bring an arts related business and presence to First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands. Taking its name not only from its location on the second floor but from its focus on work with a story – the gallery will present art and exhibitions with narrative, fantasy, drama or other features that inspired the work’s creation. The gallery is also committed to the local community and works with other galleries and arts organizations to promote arts and culture in Monmouth County.
